3:15 am

You sleep on your side. Your hips have been paying for it.

On your side, the top knee slides forward and takes your pelvis and lower back with it. One pillow behind your back, in front of your chest and between your knees keeps everything level.

The story

Nothing to rearrange at 3am.

  1. 11:30 pm

You settle on your side, the way you always have.

  2. 3:15 am

Your top knee has slid forward and down. Your pelvis turned with it and your lower back followed. The ache wakes you, and you shuffle pillows in the dark.

  3. 7:00 am

Stiff hips getting out of bed, and you blame your age.

  4. Tonight

One long pillow holds your back, your front and your knees at once. Hips stacked, spine level, and you stay where you settled.

What it does about it

The side sleeper body pillow

Something between your knees

Keeps the top leg from dragging your pelvis round, which is where side-sleeper hip and back ache starts.

Holds you front and back

Support behind your spine and something to hold in front, so you stay on your side without trying.

Replaces the pile

Head, back, hips and knees from one pillow, not four that migrate by 2am.

A favourite in pregnancy and for nursing. From the second trimester it holds bump, back and knees together, and afterwards, wrapped round your waist, it lifts the baby to feeding height and takes the load off your arms.

The science, plainly

Why this works, and who says so.

A pillowbetween your legs

Hospital physiotherapists give this advice for pelvic and hip pain in pregnancy: sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs. The same mechanics apply to any side sleeper, because the top leg is what turns the pelvis.

28 weeksin pregnancy

From 28 weeks the advice is to fall asleep on your side, for naps as well as nights. If you wake on your back, do not worry. Just roll over again.

Questions

Do I need to be pregnant?

No. It is a side sleeper pillow first. Pregnancy is where most women discover it.

Will it fit my bed?

It takes about half of a 150 cm bed. Partners adjust.

Is it useful after pregnancy?

Yes. It works as a nursing support, and as a side sleeper pillow for as long as you want it.

You have slept on your side your whole life. Your hips would like a word.
