3:00 am

It is 3am and you are awake. Again.

Nothing is wrong, and you are awake anyway. Start with what is in the room.

1:40 am

The exam is at nine. The flat upstairs has other plans.

A dog, a flatmate, a party two floors up. Turn the building down and get the last chapter in.

6:10 am

The baby finally sleeps. Then the sun comes up.

You have ninety minutes. Make them dark.

Made by women, for women.

Because we need to take care of ourselves.

What 3am costs

One bad hour takes the whole next day down.

  1. 3:00 am

Awake, for no reason you can name.

  2. 7:00 am

The alarm goes and you are already tired.

  3. 11:00 am

Coffee number three. You are present, not functioning.

  4. 2:30 pm

You need a nap. If you take it, tonight is ruined. If you do not, the afternoon is.

  5. 11:30 pm

Exhausted and somehow not sleepy. The routine is gone, and 3am is waiting.

  6. Tonight

Find the thing in the room that wakes you, and take it away.

You cannot look rested without resting.

Skin, mood, patience, memory. All of it is made at night.

Four reasons a woman wakes at three

Start with the one that sounds like last night.

It is not in your head

Women lose more sleep than men, and the research is clear on it.

1.4xwomen compared with men

Women are about 40 percent more likely than men to have insomnia.

39 to 47%in perimenopause

of women report disturbed sleep, rising to as many as 60 percent after menopause. Waking in the night is by far the most common complaint.

2nd halfof the night is lighter

Deep sleep is packed into the first hours. By three you are in lighter, dreaming sleep, and whatever is in the room wins: a sound, a light, the heat, an aching hip.
