3:20 am

To fall back asleep, your body has to cool down. Your pillow is holding the heat.

Hot flushes, tropical nights, or both at once. You flip the pillow for the cool side and it lasts a minute. This one stays cooler for longer, and holds your neck level while it does.

The story

Hot at 3:20. Cold at 3:50. Awake until five.

  1. 3:20 am

Heat from nowhere. Covers off. You turn the pillow over for the cool side, and a minute later it is as warm as the first.

  2. 3:50 am

Cold now. Covers back on. Wide awake, and cross about it.

  3. 7:00 am

A stiff neck on top of a short night.

  4. Tonight

A gel layer that keeps moving heat away from your head, and a shape that holds your neck where it belongs. When the flush comes, the pillow is cooler to start with.

What it does about it

Cooling cervical memory foam pillow

Stays cooler for longer

A gel layer moves heat away from your head, with no fan and nothing to plug in.

Holds the curve of your neck

A centre hollow for your head and raised sides for your shoulders, so your spine stays level on your back or your side.

Keeps its shape

Memory foam that comes back every night. The cover zips off and goes in the wash.

It does not treat hot flushes. It keeps the place your head rests cooler when one arrives. And it works for him too: sleeping on his side is the first thing doctors suggest to a snorer, and a pillow that makes the side comfortable is how he stays there.

The science, plainly

Why this works, and who says so.

39 to 47%of women in perimenopause

report disturbed sleep, and waking in the night is by far the most common complaint. The more nights with hot flushes or night sweats, the more broken the sleep.

20°Cand no lower

That is a tropical night, and the Mediterranean coast now has them through the summer. Sleep comes as your core temperature falls, and your head and neck are where you shed that heat, or fail to.

Questions

How long until I get used to it?

Give it a week. A shaped pillow feels different for the first few nights because your neck is being held where it should be.

Is it firm?

Medium firm. It supports without pushing back.

Does it suit a back sleeper?

Yes. The centre hollow holds your head on your back, and the raised sides take over when you turn.

You spend a third of your life on it. It should be the coolest thing in the room.
